Those kids today: PC over TV, study says

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - In households with children, the screen being watched is more likely to be a PC than a television.

It's a trend that continues to grow, too. Frazier said more than twice the amount of kids personally own a portable digital music player now compared with last year, while cell phone ownership is up 50%.

This study amuses me, because I saw this coming. I've already decided that when I can afford it, I'll completely replace my television with my computer. For all practical purposes, I already have; my VHS tapes can be converted to digital and burned on DVD (except the Macrovisioned ones, which generally are available for purchase on DVD anyway), and everything else will play directly on a computer. Video cards with cable inputs run anywhere from $30-300, and someday I'll have a nice, big RAID system with Terabytes of space. I already have most of my CDs ripped to my old computer's harddrive so I can use it as my own personal jukebox. You can get a lot of music on a 15 GB drive, but the video will need a lot more.

Basically, the computer will replace most other consumer electronics - TV, CD player, DVD player, and even the telephone, once Vonage and Skype and FreeWorldDialup get through.
