Computer Advice
Jan. 18th, 2006 04:36 pmDad wants recommendations on computer stuff for the loan brokerage. He's given me some sort-of specs on what he wants, though his "The Sky Will Fall Every Day So We Need To Be Prepared With Boulder-Proof Umbrellas" attitude was getting on my nerves.
He wants to run Linux, which I know next-to-nothing about. Building a desktop machine for Linux shouldn't be too hard, but he also wants a laptop and he wants to make the two machines essentially interchangeable. I have found a couple of places that sell laptops with Linux on them, but there is no variety, and Dad has some pretty specific hardware requirements. I have NOT found anyone who sells laptops without an opsys at all. Dell and IBM, the two he mentioned being familiar laptop makers, only offer WinXP. He did express a willingness to use XPPro, which is much easier to find, though even XPPro is not as reputable as Mac or Linux for system stability. It's also more expensive, and he's saying he wants to pay no more than $1000 for both a laptop and a desktop.
I'm reasonably sure I can build a machine to his specifications, but the opsys and pricetag are going to be a problem, I'm thinking. Most laptops cost a minimum of $600, and unless I can find an unbelievable deal, we'll have to choose features or price on the desktop.
( Give me suggestions? )
